Creating Personal Rituals and Sacred Events

Who ever forgets their wedding day?

Rituals and ceremonies are an important part of the human experience, often marking "passages" from one phase of life to another. Birthday parties are a signal that we have achieved another year on Earth and wish to celebrate it with our friends and family. Weddings are a transformational portal from two important phases of life: being single to being married. A daily Sunrise Salutation" reminds us that each day is a brand new beginning and to be thankful for the blessings in our life. The value of these rituals and ceremonies becomes more important as we search for a spiritual connection to the Universe and a way of connecting with the flow of Life itself.

According to the World Book of Facts, 10% of Americans claim "no religion" when surveyed about their religious affiliation, and an additional 5% claim to be atheists (meaning that they don't believe in God or gods). This "no religion" category is the third largest group of respondents, behind #1 Roman Catholic and #2 Baptist. This does not imply that such people are not spiritual -- in my experience many are very much so.

It is quite clear that all people have a profound psychological and cultural need for ceremonies and Rites of Passage.  One thing that has been lost in many modern religious traditions is the powerful experience of the personal ritual. It is one thing to know a spiritual truth; it can be quite another to actually experience that truth in a deep and meaningful way. Ritual is perhaps the oldest and most successful way of bridging this gap between knowing a spiritual truth and experiencing that truth in your daily life.

Rituals and ceremonies help us connect with the Great Mysteries of existence, but these Mysteries exist whether we perform rituals or not. Keep in mind that rituals exist for us as a gateway for us to connect with the divine. The divine will exist whether we have sacred acts in our daily lives or not - but our purposeful connection to the divine enhances our lives by adding a layer of spirituality on top of the mundane world and all its struggles.

In "Healing Ceremonies" the authors say: "We believe that ceremonies have the potential to strengthen the body's immune response." Ceremonies bind us with our community and family, and this feeling of mutual love and support can assist us when illness strikes. They continue, "Prayerfulness allows us to reach a plane of experience where illness can be experienced as a natural part of life, and where its acceptance transcends passivity. If the disease disappears, we are grateful; if it remains, that too is reason for gratitude."

Keeping this in mind, the first goal of creating your own ritual or ceremony is to establish a clear goal for your ritual. It's important to keep this goal foremost in your mind when creating and performing the ritual, or planning the ceremony or event.

As an exercise, take any upcoming event that is important to you. Ask yourself:

bullet

How can I make this more sacred?

bullet

What small, personal rituals can I incorporate?

bullet

Should these rituals be performed in private or with others?

bullet

What is the purpose of the ritual, ceremony or event, both the mundane purpose and the spiritual purpose?

Experiencing Heaven

by Julie Jordon Scott

This morning I felt heaven.

To the outside observer, it may have appeared as "Woman sitting on the porch in the early morning with pencil and notepad in hand." It was much more than that.

Even in mid July in Bakersfield, there is something about the freshness of the early morning air that makes my heart leap from my chest with joy.

I took a deep breath, smiled and connected with my pencil and the page.

I reached into heaven and divinity reached back.

This experience of heaven is something available to each of us every single day. Frequently the choice is to just not access heaven. We get too busy with our hectic schedules or our "have-to-dos" and "gotta-dos" to just allow that little tickling in our center to open up, to welcome heaven in and then break heaven open.

This morning when my children awaken, they will experience a post-heavenly-visit Mom instead of a tired, what is next on our relentless to-do-list Mom.

My clients will hear a Julie who is a smidgen lighter.

My neighbors will receive a more authentic smile as we greet each other.

The simplest result is I will feel better so that I will produce higher quality work, give with more abundance and the reward will be that much sweeter. Not because I am looking or pushing or striving for the sweet reward: it will manifest simply because I chose today to reach into heaven first.

I connected with that which brings me peace, joy, tranquility, freedom and allows me to contemplate and contribute in a way that invokes grandeur into each subsequent experience.

Your method of accessing heaven is, most likely, personalized to you. It might be similar to mine and it might be completely different.

It is up to you to experiment with different methods and techniques through following the call of your heart. For example, if you find you really feel connected when you are out in your garden, create a daily means - a context of a sacred, set aside time - a "me" time -- of being out in your garden. If you feel really vibrant when you play the piano, set aside some sacred time to play the piano.

Pay attention to what brings out your vitality and follow that vitality to your experience of heaven.

Is there freshness in your life that you can connect with regularly? An experience with traces of heaven connected to it?

Commit to experiencing heaven at least once a day, that set apart "time for me to meet heaven".

Loads of Goals But No Place to Go

by Asoka Selvaraja, Ph.D.

All the personal growth literature tells us we should have goals to work on, affirmations to repeat, and that we should be constantly visualizing our future each day. All well and good. So...

If that's true, then why are most people in exactly the same place after all this personal growth stuff as they were before they started?

The reason comes down to an overall lack of life vision. In other words, there is no master plan for life. What is the point of setting goals, or working on affirmations, if you have no idea where the thrust of your life is headed in the first place? In other words, what are you here on this Earth to do? WHY are you working towards these goals (if you have any)?

Most people do not have any answers to these basic questions. Ask a small child, and you're quite likely to get an answer to the question, "What do you want to be when you grow up?". However, if you ask an adult a similar question, such as, "Where would you like to be in 10 years time, and what would you like to be doing?", you are likely to be greeted by silence...

Aren't you?!...

So, how can we have given up on our dreams to this extent? Part of the answer lies in childhood. Whether at school or at home, the need to be "realistic" and "stop daydreaming" was hammered into each of us again and again. So effective was this mental conditioning that most of can no longer figure out WHY we have no idea what our dreams are! We have been so conditioned from the outside, and have compromised so often on the inside, that there is no dreaming power left. That which is nurtured grows. That which is neglected withers and dies.

Instead, we find ourselves in a place we never planned to be in. Most of us simply drifted there, without plan or design. Then, from that position, we try to create goals and dreams that the critical mind regards as "appropriate" or "possible". However, because these goals are not true to our hearts, they do not motivate us, or fill us with any passion to achieve them.

Goals, and all the rest of it, do no good if you have nowhere specific you are heading to. You really need to get your head above day-to-day concerns to determine what the whole point of your goals is.

Michael Gerber, author of "The E-Myth" describes a similar situation in the world of business. It seems that a lot of people become business entrepreneurs, mainly from a desire to escape the slavery of the 9 to 5 routine, and be free of the boss. The only problem is that, whilst these people may be good "technicians," this does not necessarily guarantee success in their own business. Instead, many find themselves "trapped" in their dream, to the point where they finally hate it, and realize that this was not what they really wanted anyhow.

Look at it another way. Hollywood typically spends over $100 million on a blockbuster movie. With these figures at stake, directors cannot afford to mentally drift. Films made these days are storyboarded first; drawings (or even animations), are created for every single shot in every single scene. Everything is visualized with crystal clarity before filming even begins. By contrast, imagine the sort of movies we would be watching if directors went about their craft the way we do our lives!

Without a clear vision of where we are heading, we can be terribly active achieving goals that take us nowhere specific. Indeed, all this activity can serve as a good excuse for not raising our heads high enough to see where we are actually going. Or NOT going!

So, what can you do? The answer is, develop a vision, as clearly as possible, for what your life is about, and where you are heading. What is your "major definite purpose", as Napoleon Hill termed it? What are you here to do?

If you do not know the answer to this question, this is the first goal you should set; to find out. You must develop a mental image of your desired future, and develop it so clearly that you can see it, smell it, taste it and touch it. Then, keep that vision before you often each day, and use it to fuel your goal creation.

Take time to ponder your dreams. Give yourself a regular period of time each day to do this, especially if you have no clear vision of them at present. This process may take time and cannot be hurried, because you are reactivating faculties that have been long dormant. Without this clear vision, any other goals and affirmations you develop are virtually as good as useless. Yes, they may take you forward a bit. But in which direction, and for what purpose? Without an overall life vision, you really have no
idea.

You should ask yourself questions about all aspects of your life. Where do you want to be financially, spiritually, in relationships, healthwise, and so on? Gradually let the vision develop as you relax and take time to elicit it from deep within you. You may wish to write it down as it emerges.

Try not to judge or censor. That will only shut down the creative process. Let it be okay to think of the ridiculous, because nothing is as ridiculous as it may seem. People have taken up mountaineering at the age of sixty five. There was a time when Van Gogh had to learn to draw, and he was already an adult at the time!

Hence, be gentle with yourself, but retain the belief that much is possible if you have faith. It may takes days, weeks or even months. However, if you make developing a life vision your primary goal, then all others will fall into place, and you will find the infinite inner energy with which to accomplish them.
