Often, during the online
classes and workshops, new folks ask what are the "formal chat rules" and why do
we use them. I hope this explanation helps.
It's really simple, kind of
like raising your hand in a classroom. Often there are 20 or more people in an online
chat, and when everyone has a comment or question, it could become hard to follow
conversations. With formal chat rules, we provide structure to the conversation, so that
everyone has an opportunity to make comments and/or ask questions. It also allows the
querent or "readee" during online psychic readings to give feedback. Think
of it as an electronic Talking Stick.
If you have a question or
comment, type an exclamation point (!) and send it to the room (like raising your hand in
class). The class leader or moderator will call on people in turn. "GA" means
"Go Ahead" ...so, when it's your turn to "speak", the moderator will
type "GA yourname".
When you're done speaking,
type GA to let the moderator knows you're done and that we can continue with the class or
chat.
When you type your question or
comment, type a sentence at a time, then type ellipses (...) to let us know you have more
to say. Don't compose/type whole paragraphs to send at one time
it's called
"flooding" in the world of online chats and some people have their software set
to ignore flooding (meaning they won't see what you've typed). This tends to completely
fill up people's screen and forces them to scroll back to re-read what was typed. It's
hard for us to read that way, and we never know if you're typing -or- asleep! It's better
to type small amounts and send each line in short "bursts".
This is what a chat looks like
when formal chat rules are used:
