THE DART COMPETITION -- THREE WAYS!

by Joan Bramsch
When I worked at a small private school I taught several subjects.  Not only did I team-teach pre-school music, I led a creative writing class for primary students, as well as, teach Physical Education to the entire school population which numbered 160 children.

One fond memory of those years concerns the Dart competition held between three groups of third-graders, both girls and boys.  Each group of five children practiced differently to prepare for the Great Dart Throw.

Group One practiced throwing darts at a target for twenty minutes each day during recess after lunch.  Group Two practiced throwing darts at a target for ten minutes each day, and simply thought about throwing the darts at the target for an additional ten minutes each day.  Group Three never touched a dart, but only thought about throwing darts at a target for twenty minutes every day.  Imaging the act of throwing a dart at a target, the children in this group, with eyes closed while breathing deeply, would "see" themselves pick up a dart, heft the weight of it, gauge the distance to the target, then throw the dart, hitting the target exactly in the center of the red bull's eye.  Over and over this group repeated in the imagination the act of spotting, throwing and hitting the target with a dart during those twenty minutes after lunch each day.

After three weeks' target practice and/or imaging the target practice, the competition was held.  Can you guess the results?  Of course, you can, if you believe in the power of the mind!

Group One, who had practiced actual throwing at a target each day, got fair results, scoring one bull's eye for every five throws.  That's a twenty percent success rate.

Group Two, who had practiced actual throwing at a target for half the time and imaging throwing at a target for the other half time, obtained good scores, with one bull's eye for every four throws for a twenty-five percent success rate.

But Group Three, the group of children who had only imaged throwing a dart at a target, got excellent scores.  For every two throws, the members of Group Three got one bull's eye.  That's a FIFTY PERCENT SUCCESS RATE!  And they had never held a dart in their hands or aimed at a target before the moment of competition.

Now you tell me...Is the mind more powerful than the body?  Or what!
